Makeup junkies could easily join the cult of the Dior Quint: the powders are smooth and pigmented — even if I’m sometimes surprised by the five colors they’ve selected to work together. But I’ve been asking myself whether I’ve identified all the possible uses for one of these palettes. Good for travel? Absolutely. And if you’ve got application skills, they can look like magic. But would it make a good Christmas gift for my mother-in-law? Probably not. The brand would be high enough, the presentation would be lovely enough… But, as a casual makeup user, I don’t think she would open the lid and feel inspired. Sometimes you look at a palette and instantly comprehend how to use it… My instinct says this isn’t one of those times.
Dior powders tend to surprise me — I feel like they swatch slightly differently from the way they look in the pan (am I crazy?). Also, a handy field guide: all iridescent palettes end with the digit 9. And finally, if you fall in love with a Dior Quint at the counter, be sure to ask whether it’s limited edition.
