Guest Swatcher: RGB Steel

Once again, I was curious about a line, and Soaper1 bravely sallied forth to investigate. Here are her swatches and review of one of the shades from RGB cosmetics.

RGB Cosmetics (despite the name, the brand is solely dedicated to nail products) recently celebrated its first birthday. The line started with 10 colors and over the past year has nearly doubled its offering to 19 shades — they also sell a base coat and a top coat.

Their polishes are formaldehyde-, toluene-, and DBP-free. They are also cruelty-free and manufactured in the United States. I’d been wanting to try these polishes since the brand launched, but the $14 price tag always stopped me (the price does include shipping).

To celebrate their first anniversary, RGB offered a BOGO sale, and it was just the push I needed to try them out. I ordered Minty (mint green creme), Steel (medium grey creme), Haze (smokey violet creme), and Toast (taupe creme).

Steel applied nicely, and was very nicely opaque in two coats. The brush was a bit wonky — it didn’t want to fan out, which made it a little awkward.

I topped this manicure with one coat of Seche Vite, as always, and waited a full two hours before going bed. The next morning, I had a few sheet marks and the tips looked slightly pushed back. It wasn’t Seche-Vite-shrinkage. I also had a couple of chips in less than 24 hours. Not all polishes work well with just any base or top coat, so maybe I need to use the ones from RBG — find a different combination of the base coats and top coats I have. That said, I haven’t had any problems with other brands of polish.

RGB polishes are .40 fl oz, just slightly smaller than most bottles. They are available online at rgbcosmetics.com and at select retailers (there’s a list on their website).

I remember Michelle from alllacqueredup.com doing a blog post on how some top coats worked with RBL polishes and some didn’t – something about the ingredients reacting together and not allowing the polish to stick?

My memory might be faulty, but I’d recommend trying a different top coat. I’d love to see swatches of Minty and Toast too – I haven’t bought any RBL polishes since they changed the bottle labels!
