Sneak Peek: Burberry Cosmetics

Burberry beautyIf you’ve picked up a fashion magazine or logged onto the internet lately, you’ve probably heard that Burberry is expanding into cosmetics.

For now, Nordstrom has the exclusive on the iconic brand’s new beauty line, but only five locations across the U.S. are launching Burberry counters:

  • Bellevue, WA
  • San Francisco, CA
  • Costa Mesa, CA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Paramus, NJ

The rest of us will have to shop online, and yes, I’m jealous.

The cosmetics brand is meant to be effortless, elegant, and modern — focusing on “natural beauty.” The line is also REALLY extensive. Here’s what they’ll start off with:

“Lip Cover” Soft Satin Lipstick ($30) comes in 21 shades. The formula promises to wear like a second skin AND hydrate your lips. They claim UV protection, but I haven’t seen any mention of an SPF.

“Lip Glow” Natural Lipgloss ($27) comes in 12 shades. I’m thinking, based on the descriptions I’ve read, that these are going to be sheer-to-semi-sheer.

Lip Definer Shaping Pencil ($27) is launching in just 6 shades, but I’d bet they’ll introduce more.

Sheer Eyeshadow ($29) comes in 20 shades, and I think this might be the single item I’m most curious about. The shades seem to focus on purples, roses, and “naturals” (grey and brown) — and the fact that Burberry named them “sheer” says to me that they’re really dedicating themselves to that “natural beauty” makeup mission. The shadows do contain silicone (to make the powder glide more smoothly); I don’t know if anyone’s sensitive to silicone in eyeshadow.

Eye Definer Shaping Pencil ($27) comes in just five shades, but — based on name alone — I feel like Burberry chose those shades wisely: Midnight Black, Midnight Brown, Midnight Ash, Midnight Blue, Midnight Plum. I like a dark eyeliner to make my lashes look fuller and “anchor” my eyeshadow.

Effortless Mascara ($28) is Burberry’s only mascara at this time. It promises volume (which I like), foolproof application, “increased growth and strengthening of lashes,” and protection from heat, humidity, and rain. I’d love to put this one to the test.

There are two foundations: Sheer Luminous Fluid Foundation ($52, 1 oz.) and Sheer Luminous Compact Foundation ($55 and I don’t know the size). Both come in 9 shades.

The fluid is sheer covering, hydrating, and luminizing. The powder can be used dry (for more sheer coverage) or damp for a little more coverage.

Burberry also has a bronzer (Warm Glow Natural Bronzer; $48, four shades) and a pressed powder (Sheer Luminous Pressed Powder, an odd name since it claims to kill shine. $45, two shades, satin finish, ultra finely milled).

And the coup de grace: five shades of Light Glow Natural Blush, a pressed powder blush that reportedly looks good on everyone. The blush also contains silicones.

There’s just one brush in the collection, but it looks SO pretty in the promo picture. It’s basically a darling little goat-and-pony hair kabuki for applying your face powders. It’s $52.
