I love giving wallets for presents, it is something that they will always use everyday and will see it everytime they use it, so I make sure I pick one up with nice leather and many plastic pockets to hold plenty of cards.

My boyfriend is hard to shop for, so I try to make a note of things he says he wished he had, or could afford :) Last year I did a holiday “treasure hunt” through my house, and in his card I made a list of things with riddles and clues. The best present he got after finding a couple tools, games, clothes, etc ended up being in the bedroom ;)

I can be very blunt and ask them what they would like as a present, that way I know that they will like what they receive. I always try to sneak in a surprise present like a nifty little gadget or a computer game as a stocking filler though.
