Hourglass Prodigy Lipgloss

Hourglass, Prodigy lipglossHourglass is a prestige cosmetics line carried by Barney’s and Sephora. (I remember the brand arriving in Dallas a year or two ago, though their website says they were founded in 2004, and picked up by those two retailers in 2007).

Anyway, when I think of the brand, I think of their back-pocket-shaped Prodigy lipgloss, their supersoft taklon brushes, and their artistic director, Gina Brooke (former artistic director at Shu Uemura and makeup artist to Madonna).

They’ve been on my to-swatch list forever, so this past weekend I thought I’d check out those funky, famous Prodigy glosses.
Hourglass, Prodigy, lipgloss, swatches, Ingenue, Opium, Eden, Heroine, Surreal, Pulse, Hypnotic, Legend, KarlaSugar, Karla Sugar
Ingenue is a sheer, milky blush. Opium is sparkly rose-mauve. Eden is sheer warm peach-rose. Heroine is cool white-pink. Surreal is orange with pink shimmer. Pulse is sheer watermelon with gold sparkles. Hypnotic is violet-rose with gold sparkles. Legend is sheer warm rose.

I tried on Legend, and though it wasn’t sticky, it was basically clear. I couldn’t really see much color on my lips. The packaging is also a little finicky: the cap only goes on in one orientation (unless you’ve jammed it on the wrong way a few times; then it can go on either way).  Prodigy glosses are $26 each.

I had Legend at some point – formula was fabulous and it actually showed up as some color on me, but I returned it due to the packaging – I really don’t like a slant tip applicator! I remember the Sephora SA seemed personally offended when I returned it – she was aghast that I didn’t adore such a marvelous gloss!

  • Perfect timing! I’ve been wanting to try some Hourglass products but I do not like sheer lipgloss. Surreal looks AMAZING though!

Thank you for swatching these! I’ve tried 2 and all showed up very well on my pigmented lips, so it’s such a shame that they don’t work for you. The formula is absolutely gorgeous (HOW hard is it to find a non-sticky, unscented, smooth gloss?) although I agree that the packaging has its annoyances.

Are yours lips very pigmented? The glosses LOOK pigmented on your arm, so it seems weird that they’d pretty much be clear on…which is kinda too bad…

I have a bright pink gloss (Primal?) in the regular lip gloss-type packaging. It’s bright pink for maybe 15 minutes tops, then the color is gone. Considering I could’ve bought a Glossimer instead of the Hourglass gloss, I was really disappointed with the purchase. I’m not surprised that you found Legend to be clear.

    Karla,

Would you consider eventually swatching the Hourglass Eyeshadow duos? I’ve looked everywhere but I can’t find any that would be as clear and accurate as yours.
