Lips of the Day: Buxom Amsterdam

Today's lip product is a sleeper hit: Buxom Big and Healthy Lip Stick in Amsterdam. Buxom is a sub-brand of Bare Escentuals — but I still haven't gotten on the mineral wagon, so I wouldn't say I'm fluent in BE's product offering. I got this mini lip-color crayon as a freebie with a recent Sephora order (because the promo picture looked pretty). If you sniff the lip crayon, you'll smell the same burnt-sugar scent of the Buxom glosses (swatched here and here). But apply it to your lips and t...

Lips of the Day: Chanel Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Exces

I was attracted to Exces when I swatched it, but it was Liz's lip swatch over at Cafe Makeup that really pushed me over the edge. I love how Exces is pigmented-but-sheer. Actually, when you first dab it on, it's VERY pigmented, but as you spread it over your lips, it takes on the translucence you see in the photo. Extrait de Gloss is stickier than I remember other Chanel glosses being. It also has a classic "makeup" scent (floral?). I can smell it when I bring the applicator to my lips, bu...

Lips of the Day: Killer Heat

A few weeks ago I mentioned a book-and-lipgloss deal involving Three Custom Color. Buy Brenda Novak's new book, Killer Heat, in the first week it comes out (September 28 – October 5), mail your receipt to Brenda Novak – Lip Gloss PO Box 3781 Citrus Heights, CA 95611 And you'll receive Three Custom Color's Killer Heat lipgloss (normally $21.95) FREE. Pretty much the best deal ever, given that the book is $7.99, paperback, and even the digital version counts for the promotion. So th...

Lips of the Day: Lancome Rose Divine

I fell in love with Lancome's Rose Divine the moment I swatched it. No, the moment I saw the promo photo for their French Coquettes collection — but the swatch confirmed the attraction. Needless to say, I've been wearing this color a LOT. I'm not usually a girl for "it" bags or seasonal shades (I wear my peach-pink year-round)... but this is my fall color. It's pretty much my ideal rose shade; not so dark that it looks severe on my skintone, and not so blue it makes me look cold/dead. It's...

Lips of the Day: Viva Glam Cyndi lipgloss

As a lipstick person, I thought I was entirely content with my Viva Glam Cyndi lipstick (see arm swatches here). And though I really love and admire MAC's Viva Glam program, I wasn't expecting to want or need either of the two Viva Glam lipglosses (see arm swatches here). But this lipgloss is amazing. It's absolutely gorgeous. On my lips it's this incredibly juicy, perfect corally red. Not sheer, but just a bit translucent, with this awesome shine that's not possible from a lipstick. It's inc...

Lips of the Day: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense 32

Bonus swatch for you today, readers: Make Up For Ever's Rouge Artist Intense 32. (Click here for the arm swatch.) My favorite application method for any lipstick is tube-to-lips (though I see the value of a lip brush when you're using a bright color and need precision). On first touch, Rouge Artist Intense may feel a little dry, but when I go over my lips a second time, the lipstick feels comfortable. (And I think I mentioned before it has a rose scent). I'll be honest, I don't love thi...

Guest Swatcher: Lipstick Queen Black Shine

Another brilliant swatch-and-review from Glossedup. This girl is so on-trend it's scary. Black lipgloss is not over. It enjoyed one season of revival in Fall/Winter '09 — not a new concept then by any stretch. I bought my Lipstick Queen Black Shine gloss to pair with some opaque black lipstick, but it found another life as a lip-color mixer. Black Shine dulls down and greys out other lip colors in interesting ways. I find it works best if I use a lip brush, stroking a SMALL amount gentl...

Lips of the Day: Korres Liquid Lipstick in Nude Beige

Korres recently tweeted the introduction of a new "Raspberry" liquid lipstick (it actually does contain raspberry and pomegranate extracts), and I was instantly intrigued. For the moment, it's available online at Sephora.com (to Beauty Insiders only), or from Korres.com — but it's not yet available in stores for swatching. When I sneak peeked the new product, every single person who commented responded that they were interested in Nude Beige. Of the six shades available (Soft Pink, Nude Beige...

Featured Review: Chanel Darling

I read this fantastic review of Chanel's Rouge Allure lipstick in Darling by glossedup, and I thought you guys would enjoy it too (especially since "Chanel" is the theme of this week's giveaway). I've been fond of the Rouge Allure formula for a while now; it's thin but decently pigmented, slightly moisturizing and wears comfortably. However, until this week, I hadn't yet found my perfect shade. 'Darling' is a repromote of a permanent U.S. shade, released in the les Pop-Ups de Chanel collection....

Lips of the Day: MAC Lipglass

To complement today's arm swatches of MAC's Lipglasses, the gorgeous Sammi has graciously provided half-lip swatches of the shades she owns. Sammi says, for her, Lipglasses come second only to YSL's lipglosses (Golden Gloss and Gloss Pur). She says the colors are pigmented, the glosses last, and they are glossy without being too shiny. She likes the vanilla fragrance, too. MAC lipglasses are $14 each. Though Cultureclash and Pink Meringue were limited edition shades, the swatches were s...

Lipstick Queen Minutes 6 – 10

I hadn't forgotten my promise to lip-swatch all 15 of Lipstick Queen's Fame glosses, I've just been using my sunny days for arm swatches instead. Anyway, here are the next third of LQ's fabulous Fame glosses. I still think these are great. They're entirely unsticky, unscented, and I even like the click pen applicator. Click here for arm swatches of all 15 shades, or click here for lip swatches of the first 5. The Fame glosses are $16.50 each. 6 Minutes is sheer coral. 7 Minutes is a s...

Lips of the Day: Chanel Egerie

It probably wasn't too hard to guess which of the four Rouge Coco samples I was most attracted to. Yes, peachy pink Egerie. I applied this with a lip brush (which is not my modus operandi). It felt lightweight, with a bit of slip, and had a subtle "skincare" scent. You can see the formula wasn't nearly as thick as the swatches might have made it appear.

Lips of the Day: YSL Golden Gloss #19 Golden Petal

What does Golden Gloss #19 look like on? Charming. If you love pale pinks, I think you'll really like Golden Petal. Golden Glosses are $29 each. They're long-wearing without being the least bit sticky, and they feel fantastic. They do have a mango scent (which turns some people off), but by now I associate the scent with luxury.

Lipstick Queen Minutes 1 – 5

Yay, lips! Today I have for you the first five of Lipstick Queen's 15 Minutes of Fame Pop Art Glosses (click here for arm swatches). I'm so impressed by these completely unsticky, semi-sheer, glossy glosses — they're actually the first click pens I've ever liked. As I mentioned previously, the Pop Art glosses have a gel texture (which somehow allows them to avoid the usual click-pen problem of dispensing too much gloss), and are unscented. They are also $16.50 each. 1 Minute is a sheer, milky...

Lips of the Day: YSL Pur Gloss 48 Pure Petal

Readers, I have one more useful swatch before you go off and place your YSL FF orders. Sammi (of the modelesque lips) very kindly offered a to do a lip swatch and review of Gloss Pur #48. Gloss Pur lipglosses are $29. It's no secret that Karla and I share the same taste in lipglosses and lipsticks. Yes, we like similar colors, but we also love the same textures. My favorite glosses have always been the YSL Golden Glosses (link to swatches). They are long lasting, not too sticky, or too crea...
