I have a new philosophy toward nail polish: If you don’t like the way a shade looks, put something else on top of it!
A lot of nail polish is semi-sheer in one coat, and nail geniuses use this to their advantage, layering shades to create a custom color. I’m no color expert, but I stumbled across a combination I love, and I wanted to share it with you.
I started painting my nails with one of the OPI designer shades: Classic (a gold shimmer). The color was too close to my skintone and I wasn’t happy with the way it looked. Thinking my manicure was ruined anyway, I idly painted Sally Hansen Iced Metal (a shimmery silver in their Teflon Tough formula, long discontinued). WOW.
The gold showed through the silver, creating a warm-cool mix that I absolutely LOVE.
Bonus tip: The resulting nail polish finish is a foil (a term I just learned). It refers to a gritty, grainy, metallic look that feels smooth. And because a picture is worth a thousand words, check out this absolutely brilliant guide to nail polish finishes published by The Edge of Sanity.

Wow, it never occurred to me to layer my polishes like that. I’ll have to try it! It’s so pretty!
