Lipstick Queen Chinatown Glossy Pencils

Well readers, I’ve gotten woefully behind on what’s new from Lipstick Queen (because the manager at Barney’s said I wasn’t welcome there, and there’s nowhere else to swatch the brand), but looking at all the gorgeous new products on their website and not being able to swatch them was driving me crazy! You can’t keep a girl and her lipstick apart! So I snuck in to Barney’s (and ducked behind a counter when I saw that manager).

The results were totally worth the risk, because I got away with an armful of LQ’s Chinatown Glossy Pencils (which debuted this past spring).

Chinatown pencils are super soft, glossy, sheer… lipsticks? in chubby pencil form. (Perhaps analogous to YSL’s Gloss Volupte or Guerlain’s Kiss Kiss Baby Lipstick?) I thought they were weird at first, but now I think they’re sort of brilliant. A tube of lipstick this soft and sheer might be crushed as you apply it to your lips, but as pencils, the wood protects the product. And coloring your lips is oddly fun.

Anyway, they come in five bright, cheery — surprisingly moisturizing! — colors. I tried on (and loved) Chase, and now I want to try on Thriller, too. Chinatown pencils are unscented, $20 each, and come with their own chubby sharpener.

    >I've been lemming Mystery ever since they came out. I LOVE Lipstick Queen. It's such a shame the Barney's manger is being such a &*$@#! … IMO, all you're doing is sending business toward the industry … nothing wrong with that.
Anyhow. These remind me of the Shiseido Automatic Lip Crayons ($23). The Shiseido ones aren't as glossy, but they twist up, so you don't have to mess about with a sharpener (I always feel like I'm wasting so much product). I love them so much I've got three: LC2 (brown, warmer neutral MLBB) LC3 (bright but sheer true pink), and LC6 (muted cool rose).
It would be awesome if you swatched these at some point :)

  • Jeweled Thumb says:

    >That's awful that the manager doesn't welcome you there. I agree with Proximity. You are really just bringing them business! Shouldn't they want that?

  • Emily says:

    >That manager is an idiot! Your readers should boycott that location!

  • Winifred says:

    >Unless you have been disruptive to business (which I doubt), the Barney's manager needs to go away and find something else to do.

  • makeupmag says:

    >Considering the product awareness you raise, that kind of behaviour is very silly of the manager. Her loss!

I love the one I have (Mystery). These are wonderful! :D

  • mientjuh says:

    >Ah, boo to that Barney's manager, you should give him the link to your site! You are my favourite 'swatcher' on the web and I know I'm not alone in that: you always swatch an entire colour-line so accurately and clear! It helps to make a choose when I already know about a collection/brand and inspires me to try new ones! Infact, I didn't even know about Lipstick Queen yet but am really intruiged and inspired to find out more about LQ after seeing this post :) If anything those stores should welcome you with open arms for all that free advertisement, right?

  • gail says:

    >Boo Barneys. Don't they realize you actually help sales.

Be careful don't want jail time for lipstick swatches.

    You're the best.

  • KimKats says:

    >What is that manager's major malfunction??? She doesn't want you to show the nation a line that pretty much is exclusive to Barneys, so that the rest of the nation might call and order from this dimwit??!! That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Swatches are lovely – manager is a dipstick.

  • Charlene says:

    >WHAT THE…..I can't belive that….who determines who is welcome at a store? that's ridiculous…what, ur shopping dollars aren't worth as much as any one else that they welcome????
I was gonna ask if u are gonna swatch the lipglosses in the wind up pen looking thingy? :D they look sooo prettyyy but if u don't that is fine!

  • Crystal says:

    >You need to tell us more background on all this drama with this silly manager!

Love this site! You do amazing work!

  • Joey says:

    >Want me to fly down and kick that manager's ass? =)

    I have and adore Mystery!

  • cottonshrinks says:

    >aww thanks so much for putting in so much effort for the swatch

  • Prime Beauty says:

    >Stoopid manager! Once again we have picked the same fav. I really want to try these, where can I get them online?

Thanks for all your hard work, Karla!

  • KarlaSugar says:

    >Wellllll, I don't want to support Barney's at the moment, but I also hate for anybody to pay for shipping, and I *think* Barney's has free shipping going on right now.

You can also buy through Lipstick Queen's site, and they have a locator for other stores that carry them.

  • Ruthlessrocks says:

    >Want us to write Barney's and complain?

  • Vitória says:

    >Jesus, what an asinine manager. What in the living fuck? I mean, you're doing them A FAVOR in swatching. It's not like you ate the testers, now is it?

  • Proximity says:

    >Just some info for anyone else in the UK – SpaceNK carries Lipstick Queen on their website, and in stores as well, I believe.
I also saw (and bought, LOL!) LQ at Harvey Nichols in London.

  • Kaye says:

    >As a lipstick addict I must say i commend you! You're being proactive in this battle with the manager :)

Seriously, what's the store gonna lose? You're sending them business, really.

We don't have Chinatown products here, but these look adorable! I want them :D

  • Mireya says:

    >I, for one, appreciate you taking the risk of being chased out of Barney's again. I have been trying to find a decent swatch of Mystery ever since they first came out. Thank you!!
(Note to Barney's… I wouldn't be buying this now if it weren't for this blog.)

  • All The Pretty Things says:

    >Note to Barneys: I won't be buying from your NY or Boston location anymore. I will buy directly… and Lipstick Queen ought to get a letter.

She's a small company and I am sure she will not be happy knowing TNBTTGSY readers will not buy her products there. Ridiculous.

Also worth noting, I don't have much shopping time because I work both in Boston and NY. I rely on the swatches and info here so I can plan my purchases around work. Barneys just lost my money in NY and Boston. And I'll be sure to let my Boston SA at Barneys know why I won't be back for another Serge Lutens Gris Clair. I'll go to Aedes in the Village instead and let them talk me into Amouage.

  • Justine says:

    >How do Thriller and Medieval compare to each other? From your swatches, it looks like Medieval might be sheerer. I'm also guessing Thriller is softer in texture.

  • wolframio says:

    >..wasn't welcome.. o.0

  • EmilyR says:

    >I'll be in Dallas for the holidays, and I plan to go to Barney's to check out the LQ colors in person. And then I'll buy them from LQ directly. What a jackass manager. Barney's does not usually roll like that.

  • maddie says:

shame on Barneys! they should know that your swatching brings them business!!! let’s all boycott until the correct their issues with your free advertising for them!
