American Apparel Nail Polish

Slightly different swatches today, readers! Some of you already know that clothing brand American Apparel recently introduced a house-brand line of nail polishes. They come in 18 creme colors (no shimmer, sparkle, or frost) for $6 each — or you can buy them in-store, 3-for-$15.

I’m not a huge fan of American Apparel, but the polishes seemed intriguing (and $5 a bottle isn’t bad). I was shopping last night and happened to have my notepad with me, so I made tape swatches to photograph this morning. If you do order online, don’t forget to check for percentage discounts or free shipping codes.

My other question was how similar Mouse was to “it” polish Chanel Particuliere. Particuliere is much darker — like chocolate mousse. Mouse is more dust grey.

    >Well, now I want Mouse! But probably not enough to pay shipping and whatnot.

I haven't swatched Particuliere yet to compare it to my other taupes… none of them look quite the same in the bottle- Sparitual Sage might be closest.

    >also, whassit color on your lovely thumb?

  • BarcelonaChair says:

    >I love your little thumb poking through at the bottom, Your nails are coming along nicely with that vampy shade.

    >Not a fan of American Apparel, but I find myself liking most of these colors. Especially Office.

    >Thanks for posting these! Hopefully Mouse and/or Dynasty will work out for me, especially since $OPI Metro Chic didn't.

  • Lizzard says:

    >wow these are awesome, i cant believe the pigmentation and color variety

    >Valerie — on me that's Rescue Beauty Lounge Drifter, at an odd angle that makes it look darker than it is. I'm going to try one more time to give myself a perfect manicure with this so I can photograph it properly. :)

    >mouse to me looks like Essie's Chinchilly more than paticuliare (sp!?!)

    >Hi Karla!

I just checked out a bunch of these and compared them with some other colors in my collection they reminded me of – I live two blocks from an American Apparel store, so I swatched some on my nails and then walked home and swatched the rest – and I want to share my thoughts!

Peacock reminded me a lot of Illamasqua Muse. It turns out that it IS very similar but Peacock is slightly darker; based on what I see on my nails and a comparison picture I saw that had both Illamasqua Muse and RBL Teal in it, I'd wager that Peacock is a VERY close dupe of RBL Teal.

Hunter reminded me of Illamasqua Rampage and Zoya Envy. It turns out that Hunter is a slightly "dustier" looking green than either of the other two (so it looks more creamy and less jelly-like than Rampage or Envy). Hunter is also more neutral than Rampage (cooler) and Envy (warmer).

Dynasty looks a lot like OPI Parlez-Vous OPI?. Dynasty appears to be a bit more sheer and pink-toned (the OPI is the more gray of the two) but overall they are very similar.

Of the 8 colors I tried (Factory Grey, Rose Bowl, Passport Blue, Dynasty, Mount Royal, Peacock, Hunter, and Office), most were moderately sheer (would require two coats to look even and opaque). The only exceptions were Mount Royal (much more opaque, even with just one coat) and Office (WAY sheerer than the others – required four coats to reach bottle color/stop looking streaky, and by that point it looked goopy instead! Total disappointment).

I ended up buying Passport Blue, Mount Royal, and Hunter. :) Factory Grey was pretty cool, too – I may end up going back for that one.

    >Kristina: that was super thorough and awesome! Thank you so much!

  • Love how you labeled all the colors as such on a note pad. I generally don’t shop at American Apparel and never realized that have a pretty good assortment of colors available. But now with the new nail art pens by sassy nails, I prefer using those 2 in 1 nail polishes, has anybody else used them before?
