Adventures in Dubai: Ormonde Jayne perfume

Ormonde Jayne displayAbout a year ago, a friend sent me a sample of a fragrance from a British perfumery called Ormonde Jayne. The brand is incredibly elusive, sold only in their single boutique in London (which I still dream of visiting) and online. The fragrance was Woman, and it is one of my absolute favorites.

O.J.’s website describes the notes:

Top: Cardamom, coriander and grass oil
Heart: Black hemlock, violet and jasmine absolute
Base: Vetiver, cedar wood, amber and sandalwood

Anyway, when I blogged that I’d be traveling to Dubai, a wonderful friend informed me that the brand has extended their presence to a shop there — I was over the moon! I have always admired the complexity of Woman, and I was thrilled at the chance to sniff more of the brand’s offering. I happily dragged Mr. Salt (and Momma Salt) to Boutique 1 in Jumeira Beach. (We were all surprised to learn that Mr. Salt has a shockingly perceptive nose when it comes to perfume.)

They didn’t have every fragrance available (there are 13 scents in all, and I still need to find Frangipani, Tiare, Casablanca Lily, Ormonde Man, and Zizan), but the others did not disappoint. Each fragrance is so carefully layered, so complex and beautiful — I really think Ormonde Jayne belongs in a class of its own. My favorites were Woman (of course), and peppery Isfarkand (which I subsequently learned is one of their fragrances for men — I won’t let this deter me).

Boutique 1 also had Juliette Has a Gun — which I had never encountered before — but Lady Danger smelled curiously one-note after a noseful of Ormonde Jayne. I also had the chance to sniff several of Serge Lutens’ scents, and liked A La Nuit, which reminded me of the jasmine of Kate Spade’s fragrance.

If you can’t make it to either London or Dubai, Ormonde Jayne’s website offers a “discovery set,” 2 ml vials of 11 of their fragrances, for £35, with free shipping worldwide. Blogdorf Goodman and The Non-Blonde have also both written beautiful reviews of several of the house’s fragrances.

You went! Yay! I bet it was fantastic. I went to the OJ in London last year, and it was a great experience, so I just knew the one in Dubai would be wonderful too.
