I’m having a major fragrance moment. I think the expanding of beauty horizons are inevitable — one day you look up from your eyeshadow and realize there’s a big, beautiful world of nail polish out there.
I thought I had already discovered all my great fragrance loves, when Dior’s Escales a Pondichery and Marquises proved me wrong. There is so much more to sniff —and so much more profoundly, hunting out different notes, in addition to taking in the whole experience.
Calvin Klein just released a new fragrance called Beauty, and everything about it sounded so promising: it has a heart of jasmine; my style icon Diane Kruger is the face of the campaign.
Other than jasmine, I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from Beauty. Â The top note is ambrette seeds, which I had to look up. It’s a plant musk, in the same family as hibiscus. The base is cedarwood.
Honestly, Beauty is much more robust than I imagined — it’s actually too big for me. It’s a big, brass-band floral with a jasmine center; the ingredients blended into a cacophony that made it difficult for me to pick out individual notes. I think my mother-in-law, an Indian woman living in the Middle East, will wear it more comfortably than I could.
Francisco Costa, creative director for Calvin Klein, said Beauty was “designed to appeal to a more mature customer. This is a woman in her 40s, who is self-assured and secure.” Costa says the scent is “elegant, sophisticated, timeless and beautiful” — as compared to the raw sexiness of Obsession and Euphoria.
