Serge Lutens lipstick

Serge Lutens, lipstickSerge Lutens, lipstick, refillSerge Lutens is probably best known as a luxury fragrance house, but the brand also makes a very well edited selection of super-luxury cosmetics items (just one eyeshadow quad; two nail polishes; one blush; ten lipsticks, etc.). They don’t do collections, but may introduce a new item every 8 months or so.

The lipsticks are $75 each, and they’re “refillable.” That is, if you buy the whole lipstick, it’s $75. But the base (the part I’ve drawn a blue box around), the part that twists the lipstick up and down, is removable. So you can buy a refill (lipstick tube without a base) for $55.

These lipsticks also seem smaller than usual. I believe a Serge Lutens lipsticks is 2.3 g; most brands’ lipsticks are around 4 g.
Serge Lutens, lipstick, swatches, 1 Mise a Mort, 2 Roman Rouge, 3 Pourpre Maure, 4 Or Frele, 5 Rose des Glaces, 6 Mauve de Swann, 7 Votre Sienne, 8 Compliment Beige, 9 Couvre Fou, 10 Garde Rose, KarlaSugar, Karla Sugar
4 Or Frele is clear with gold sparkles. 5 Rose des Glaces is clear milky pink. 6 Mauve de Swann is sheer lilac. 8 Compliment Beige is sheer soft peach with fine shimmer. These first four shades are so delicate I wonder if they’re intended as modifiers for the other shades. 7 Votre Sienne (my favorite) is orange-red. 1 Mise a Mort is cool, bright, va-va-voom red. 10 Garde Rose is cool, bright, hot pink. 2 Roman Rouge is berry. 3 Pourpre Maure is purple (the color shirts often are when the shade name is “Plum”). 9 Couvre Fou is deep wine, a violet-red.

If you are shopping for these lipsticks, be prepared to find only the names OR the numbers (they’re sold different ways in different places).

I was also interested to learn that Serge Lutens cosmetics is owned by Shiseido (along with NARS and Cle de Peau).

OMG, Votre Sienne looks like the perfect orange-red, but my brain can’t even compute $75 for a lipstick!

These are super pretty, but I can’t get over the $75. I just think of all the other lipsticks i could buy for $75!

  • Anitacska says:

    Wow, what a bargain! :D Only $55 for a refill. :D

Aside from the obvious expense, this collection seems a odd to me. There are 4 very light lipsticks and then 6 very bright/dark ones; it looks like they have no mid-tone shades. (Maybe that’s where the blending/modifying idea comes in?)

I absolutely love the 6 intense shades! I could easily collect every one of them. However, even I can’t justify the money on this one…especially if they’re smaller than average. But I must give it to the folks over at Serge Lutens…when it comes to the reds and berries, they’ve turned out some of the loveliest colors I’ve ever seen!

Do you have a dupe for mauve de swann? I LOVE that color but can’t justify $75 for a lipstick.

Does it have to be a lipstick? It’s tricky to find another lipstick that’s so sheer. Armani 525 is similar but more pigmented ( Avon Pink Taffeta is more pink than lilac, but is actually sort of close ( There’s Dior Urban ( And MAC has made several lipsticks in the “lilac” category: Royal Azalea (, Mlle ( Actually, check out Secret Lover, too (

If I can recommend a gloss, how about MAC Ever so Rich (,

I know that the price is outrageous for a lipstick… Especially if it’s small like this one… But I love Serge Lutens. It’s so far the best! It stays on for hours, doesn’t dry my lips, doesn’t smear and the colors really stand out and very pigmented. If you don’t spend a lot of money on makeup (like eyeshadows) and like to keep a basic face with a pop of color (like I do), I think it’s worth having it!!!

I would love to see swatches of eye shadow from this line.
